WOMEN UNITED FOR CHANGE

Hendricks County group will now convene at the Obama Hdqtrs. in Plainfield (address above)

next meeting:   Thursday, Sept.18 at 7:00 PM - 1 hour

........................................................................................................................................................
Campaign workers for any candidate, please note:

1. When distributing literature for candidates, do not place it in people’s mailboxes.  That is illegal; a mailbox is to be used solely for US mail.

2. If conducting or attending programs at public libraries these cannot be partisan activities and especially not campaign activities.  The libraries cannot be seen as affiliating with one party or another.

3. When distributing political signs for candidates, be aware of local ordinances.  In Hendricks County many of our towns have similar restraints on when, where, and what signage can be used; and the rulings involved are usually found in Zoning Ordinances for your town.   Here are some points to keep in mind:

Towns consider improperly placed signs as posing a threat to public safety, particularly when they appear     in intersections, medians, ditches, on bridges, utility poles, or along sidewalks.  They must not obstruct     driver visibility, distract drivers’ attention, or force pedestrians or cyclists into traffic or onto difficult     terrain along the road.

It is illegal to place signs on public property (including easements or “right of way”), or on private property     without the owner’s permission.
“Right-of-way” is that area along the side of the road that is not private property but belongs to a                      municipality or the State of Indiana.  Utility poles are generally located within the right-of-way, so                    any sign closer to the road than the utility pole must be moved.
The Town may remove any signs that are improperly placed without notification to the campaign or                    the property owner.
Many housing developments also have “covenants” that restrict placement of signs. Check your own area     to know what applies where you live.  For example, you may be able to place a sign in a window or on a     wall, but not post a sign in your yard.

Political signs are allowed only temporarily and must be removed within 5 days after the election.

Avon does not permit signs larger than 32 square feet.  Nor does it permit placing of signs on vehicles     then leaving them parked in yards or along thoroughfares or in commercial parking lots.  (Signs may be         however be placed on vehicles that are in regular use.)
